Retooling lntertextuality – Reconfigurer l’intertextualité à l’ère des humanités numériques

As part of the ERC ModERN project, the Institut des textes et manuscrits modernes (ITEM – UMR 8132 CNRS/ENS), in collaboration with the Centre de recherche interuniversitaire sur les humanités numériques (CRIHN) and the Groupe de Recherche sur les Éditions critiques en contexte Numérique at the Université de Montréal, is organizing the conference “Reconfiguring Intertextuality in the Age of Digital Humanities.”

On this occasion, Juliette Sokolov and Nolwenn Pamart, members of the laboratory, will present a paper entitled “The Presence of La Bruyère in Montesquieu, Diderot, and Crébillon: Towards a Heuristic and Computational Approach to Paraphrase.”

The conference examines the renewal of intertextuality, a central concept in literary and cultural studies, in light of computational methods and distant reading. Bringing together theoretical approaches, corpus-based studies, and methodological innovations, the event will explore in particular how digital tools can contribute to new approaches to rewritings, textual filiations, and forms of textual borrowing.

The paper by Juliette Sokolov and Nolwenn Pamart explores the presence of La Bruyère in the works of Montesquieu, Diderot, and Crébillon, proposing both a heuristic and computational approach to paraphrase. Their research seeks to bring digital methods into dialogue with literary interpretation in order to better identify, analyze, and understand the ways in which texts circulate and are transformed.

This paper is part of a project led and developed by the laboratory, with the participation of Yann Audin, Marcello Vitali-Rosati, and William Bouchard, in collaboration with Pierre Lyraud, a researcher in the Department of French-language Literatures at the Université de Montréal.
